The Readiness Audit
Do you know what actually kills people in a hurricane?
- 🟢 Green: You know your specific Evacuation Zone, you understand that “Storm Surge” acts like a tsunami, and you have a NOAA radio for tornado alerts.
- 🟡 Yellow: You watch the news and focus on the “Cone of Uncertainty,” but you assume because you aren’t on the beach, you are safe from water.
- 🔴 Red: You judge the danger solely by looking out the window. You think “It’s just a bad thunderstorm.”
If you are Yellow or Red, execute Phase 1 immediately.
Phase 1: The Wind (Saffir-Simpson Scale)
Goal: Understand the structural threat.
Hurricanes are rated Category 1-5. This measures wind speed, not rainfall or surge.
- Cat 1 (74-95 mph): Dangerous. Shingles blow off, branches snap. Power outages likely.
- Cat 2 (96-110 mph): Extensive. Shallow-rooted trees snap (blocking roads). Siding damage.
- Cat 3 (111-129 mph): Devastating. This is the tipping point. Electricity and water will be unavailable for days or weeks. Roof decking can be removed.

- The Threat: Hurricanes spawn tornadoes in their outer bands. These can occur hundreds of miles from the eye of the storm, often with little warning.
- The Difference: Hurricane winds are unidirectional (pushing). Tornadoes involve rotation and explosive pressure changes.
- The Fix: You need a NOAA Weather Radio. When the power/internet fails, this battery-operated device will wake you up if a tornado warning is issued.

- The Knowledge: Visit your local government website to identify your Evacuation Zone (often labeled A, B, C).
- The Tech: Download the FEMA App and a reliable radar app.
- The Hardware: Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio with a battery backup or hand crank.
