Prepping for a blizzard (Part 2): The thermal bunker
Most modern homes are designed to be heated by a furnace. When that furnace dies during a blizzard, your home is no longer a shelter, it is a large, leaky box losing heat to the atmosphere every second. Without active heating, the temperature inside a standard home can drop to dangerous levels within 12 to 24 hours. Frozen pipes burst, causing catastrophic flooding, while the ambient air becomes life-threatening for the elderly and children.
You cannot control the grid, but you can control your “building envelope.” By sealing leaks and insulating pipes before the storm, you slow the rate of heat loss and buy yourself hours or days of safety.

The envelope seal (stop the drafts)
Heat moves from warm areas to cold areas. Your goal is to stop the air exchange.
1. The candle test. Pick a windy day, light a candle, and walk slowly past every window frame, door jamb, and electrical outlet on exterior walls. If the flame flickers or bends, you have a leak. Mark these spots with painter’s tape and seal them with caulk (permanent) or weather stripping (doors).
2. The window film defense. Glass is a terrible insulator. Window insulation kits (shrink wrap) create a “dead air” space between the room and the glass, acting as a thermal barrier, a double-pane effect for about $10. Apply double-sided tape to the frame, stick the plastic sheet, and shrink it tight with a hairdryer.
3. The “draft snake.” The gap under exterior doors is a major leak. Roll up a towel or buy a weighted draft snake to block cold air rushing in at floor level.
The pipe protocol (prevent flooding)
When water freezes, it expands with incredible force, rupturing copper and PVC pipes.
1. The insulator. Target pipes in unheated areas, garages, attics, crawlspaces, and cabinets on exterior walls. Buy foam pipe insulation sleeves, they are cheap and snap right on.
2. The “drip” rule. If temperatures drop below 20°F, leave the faucet furthest from the water main dripping slightly (warm and cold). Moving water is harder to freeze, and an open faucet relieves pressure buildup if ice does form.
3. The kill switch. A pipe can burst while you are sleeping. You must know where your main water shut-off valve is. Find it today, test it (turn it righty-tighty), and tag it with a bright neon label so anyone in the family can find it in the dark.
The passive solar strategy
Use the sun as a free furnace.
- Daytime: open curtains on south-facing windows and let the greenhouse effect warm your floors and furniture (thermal mass).
- Nighttime: close heavy curtains or blankets over the windows the moment the sun goes down to trap that heat inside.
The essential kit checklist
- The sealant: 2 to 3 window insulation kits (shrink film) purchased.
- The tool: a caulk gun and silicone caulk for gaps.
- The armor: foam pipe insulation for the garage and basement.
- The key: main water shut-off valve located and tagged.
- The monitor: an indoor thermometer placed away from heat sources to track the real drop.
Scenario planner (contingencies)
“I woke up and the pipes are frozen, no water comes out.” The trap is trying to thaw them with a blowtorch (fire hazard). The fix: gentle heat. Keep the faucet open and use a hairdryer or space heater to warm the section of pipe nearest the wall, never open flame. If you can’t find the freeze, shut off the main water to prevent flooding when it thaws.
“The power is out and I have no window film.” The trap is uncovered glass sucking heat out. The fix: the blanket nail, use thumbtacks or nails to hang heavy wool blankets or sleeping bags over the windows. It looks ugly, but it insulates significantly better than bare glass.
