Prepping for a blizzard (Part 3): The warm room

When the power grid fails during a blizzard, the silence of the furnace is the first sound of danger. In a modern, unheated home, temperatures can drop to match the outdoors within 24 to 48 hours. Hypothermia is a math problem: if your body loses heat faster than it produces it, you die. Trying to heat a 2,500-square-foot open-concept home with a few candles is a mathematical impossibility, you will run out of fuel before the storm ends.

The “Warm Room” strategy changes the equation. By shrinking your world down to one room, and then down to one tent, you create a “micro-climate” that traps body heat effectively, turning a life-threatening freeze into a manageable campout.

Select and seal (the fortress room)

Stop trying to heat the whole house. Pick one room.

  • Small: smaller volume is easier to heat.
  • South-facing: to maximize solar gain during the day.
  • Central: an interior room limits exposure to cold outer walls.

Then seal it: close the door, and if there are open archways, hang heavy blankets or plastic sheets to create a barrier. Cover the windows with blankets or bubble wrap, but keep them open during the day if the sun is shining.


The micro-environment (the indoor tent)

This is the most effective no-power heating hack in existence.

Even a small room is hard to heat with just body warmth, but a tent is not. Pitch a camping tent inside your designated warm room. If you don’t have a tent, build a “fort”, flip a sofa and chairs, drape blankets over them, and create a nest.

Inside the tent, the ambient temperature can be 10 to 20 degrees warmer than the rest of the room solely due to body heat and respiration. Everyone sleeps in the tent together, shared body heat is a survival multiplier. Put mattresses or foam pads on the floor to insulate from the cold ground, and pile sleeping bags on top.


Emergency heat sources (safe vs. deadly)

Safe (with precautions):

  • Indoor-safe propane: heaters like the Mr. Heater Buddy are designed for indoor use with low-oxygen shutoff sensors. You must still keep a CO detector nearby and crack a window slightly for fresh air.
  • Wood stoves: the best option, if the flue is clean and you have dry wood.
  • Soapstone/bricks: if you can heat stones over an outdoor fire, wrap them in towels and bring them into the tent as bed warmers.

Deadly (never use indoors):

  • Charcoal grills and camp stoves: these produce massive amounts of carbon monoxide, using them indoors is a suicide pact.
  • Gas ovens: do not leave the oven door open to heat the house, it is a CO hazard and a fire risk.
  • Generators: never run a generator inside, in a basement, or in a garage.

The carbon monoxide protocol

CO is the “silent killer” of winter storms, odorless, colorless, and it puts you to sleep before it kills you. You need a battery-operated CO detector (your hardwired one won’t work when the power is out). Place it in the warm room at about knee-height. If anyone complains of headache, dizziness, or nausea, get out and move to fresh air immediately.


The essential kit checklist

  • The shelter: a 4-person camping tent (or tarps and clips to build a fort).
  • The heater: an indoor-safe propane heater plus 4 to 6 bottles of propane.
  • The alarm: a dedicated battery-operated carbon monoxide detector.
  • The bedding: sleeping bags rated for 20°F or lower, or heavy wool blankets.
  • The floor: foam yoga mats or camping pads to insulate you from the cold floor.

Scenario planner (contingencies)

“We ran out of propane.” The trap is relying 100% on active heat. The fix: the human pile, retreat fully into the tent, get into sleeping bags together, and put hats on. A family of four can maintain a safe sleeping temperature in a small tent with zero external heat if insulated properly.

“The CO detector is chirping.” The trap is assuming it’s a low-battery chirp and ignoring it. The fix: evacuate. Assume it is real, open windows immediately, and turn off all heaters. Do not go back into the warm room until it has aired out for 30 minutes and the alarm stops.
