Prepping your business for disaster: The checklist

By The SHTF App Team

Over the last two articles, we have walked through the pillars of business preparedness, from understanding your insurance to assessing your risks. We have moved from the theoretical to the tactical. But knowledge alone is not enough. It must be accessible when the disaster hits and your business is on the line.

In a crisis, cognitive fragmentation sets in. You will forget things you know perfectly well. You might remember the insurance but forget the risk assessment. You might remember the committee but forget the coordinator.

This Master Checklist is your external brain. It consolidates the entire Business Continuity series into a linear, chronological protocol. Print this out. Keep it in your office. It is the script that ensures your business survives the disaster and recovers fast.

Phase 1: Review Insurance

Goal: Close the gaps in your coverage.

  • Review: Read your policy and list the perils it covers.
  • Flood: Determine if you need flood insurance.
  • Earthquake: Determine if you need earthquake coverage.
  • Interruption: Confirm business income and extra expense coverage.
  • Agent: Schedule a review with your insurance agent.

Phase 2: Assess Risks

Goal: Map your assets and hazards.

  • Assets: List people, property, operations, and information technology.
  • Hazards: Identify the hazards that threaten each asset.
  • Scenarios: Consider high and low probability scenarios.
  • Ratings: Rate probability and impact for each scenario.

Phase 3: Build Your Program

Goal: Turn the assessment into action.

  • Coordinator: Appoint a program coordinator.
  • Committee: Build a committee with key department representatives.
  • Partners: Include external representatives like fire and EMS.
  • Plan: Develop, implement, and maintain your continuity program.
