Prepping for an earthquake (Part 1): Securing your home

When we imagine earthquakes, we picture crumbling buildings and cracked highways. But in developed nations with modern building codes, the vast majority of injuries do not come from the roof collapsing. They come from your own stuff attacking you.

⚠️ Gravity is the enemy. In a 6.0+ magnitude quake, your 50-inch TV becomes a projectile. Your grandmother’s china cabinet becomes a crushing weight. Your water heater becomes a 400-pound bomb that can sever gas lines and flood your home. “Non-Structural Mitigation” is just a fancy way of saying “bolting things down.” It is cheap, effective, and entirely within your control. By securing your space, you transform your home from a potential weapon into a sanctuary.

The Readiness Audit

Look around the room you are sitting in. If the room flipped 45 degrees, what would hit you?

  • 🟢 Green: Your tall bookcases are anchored to studs with L-brackets. Your water heater has double metal straps. You use museum wax on your collectibles.
  • 🟡 Yellow: You have a “tipping restraint” on the dresser in the baby’s room, but your 60-inch TV is just sitting on its stand leg.
  • 🔴 Red: Nothing is secured. You have heavy mirrors hanging over the bed and glass vases on high shelves.

If you are Yellow or Red, execute Phase 1 immediately.


Phase 1: The Heavy Hitters (Furniture & Appliances)

Goal: Prevent crushing injuries and blocked exits.

1. The “Tall & Heavy” Rule

  • The Target: Any piece of furniture taller than it is wide (bookshelves, armoires, china cabinets).
  • The Fix: L-Brackets or Nylon Straps.
  • The Technique: Do not just screw into the drywall, the drywall will rip. You must find the stud. Use a stud finder. Screw one end of the bracket into the top of the furniture and the other into the wall stud.
  • Rental Hack: If you cannot drill large holes, look for “No-Drill” furniture straps that use high-bond adhesives, though bolting is always superior.

2. The Water Heater (The Bomb)

  • The Threat: This is the most dangerous object in your house in an earthquake. If it tips, it snaps the gas line (fire) and the water line (flood).
  • The Fix: Double strapping.
    • Use heavy-gauge metal strapping (plumber’s tape is often too weak, buy a specific seismic kit).
    • Place one strap on the top third and one on the bottom third.
    • Anchor the straps to the wall studs behind the tank.

Phase 2: The Sharps (Glass & Kitchen)

Goal: Prevent the floor from becoming a minefield of broken glass.

1. Mirrors and Art

  • The Threat: Heavy frames jumping off hooks and shattering.
  • The Fix: Closed-Loop Hooks. Replace standard “J” hooks (where the wire rests in an open curve) with closed eye-hooks or security hardware that locks the wire in place.
  • Bed Rule: Never hang a heavy mirror or glass-framed art directly above the headboard. If it falls while you sleep, it is catastrophic.

2. The Kitchen Cabinet Projectile

  • The Threat: Shaking causes cabinet doors to swing open, launching heavy plates, glasses, and canned goods across the kitchen.
  • The Fix: Positive latching catches.
    • These are mechanical latches (often used for child safety) that require you to press or pull to open the door. Magnetic catches are not strong enough for an earthquake.
    • Priority: Start with the cabinets containing glass and heavy cookware.

Phase 3: The Electronics & Valuables

Goal: Protect expensive gear and sentimental items.

1. The Flat Screen

  • The Fix: Even if it’s on a stand, anchor it. Use anti-tip TV straps that bolt into the VESA mount holes on the back of the TV and connect to the wall or the furniture stand.

2. The “Museum Wax” Trick

  • The Fix: For vases, collectibles, and lamps sitting on tables, use Quakehold! or museum wax. A small pea-sized ball under the object secures it surprisingly well against sliding and toppling, yet allows you to move it if you twist firmly.

The “Essential Kit” Checklist

  • The Hardware: A box of 2-inch L-brackets and wood screws.
  • The Finder: A reliable electronic stud finder.
  • The Straps: A specific “Water Heater Seismic Strap Kit.”
  • The Wax: A jar of clear museum wax for shelf items.
  • The Latches: Push-latches for all upper kitchen cabinets.
