Prepping for a wildfire (Part 2): Home hardening

Your home’s survival depends on its weakest point. Embers exploit gutters full of leaves, unscreened vents, and flammable siding. Hardening your home is the single most effective thing you can do.

⚠️ The “Distance” myth. People think living far from the forest means they’re safe. But embers can travel a mile or more, and homes in suburban neighborhoods burn just as readily as homes in the woods.

The Readiness Audit

Is your home hardened against embers?

  • 🟢 Green: Your gutters are clean, your vents are screened, and your roof is Class A fire-rated.
  • 🟡 Yellow: You have a wood shake roof or unscreened vents, and you’ve never thought about embers.
  • 🔴 Red: Your gutters are full of leaves and your vents are wide open.

If you are Yellow or Red, execute Phase 1 immediately.


Phase 1: The Roof (Your First Line of Defense)

Goal: Make your roof ember-resistant.

  • The Material: A Class A fire-rated roof, metal, tile, or composition shingles, is the standard. Wood shake roofs are the most vulnerable and should be replaced.
  • The Gaps: Repair or replace missing shingles and tiles. Embers can lodge in gaps and ignite the roof deck.
  • The Debris: Keep the roof clear of leaves, pine needles, and debris that embers can ignite.

The Takeaway: Your roof is the largest surface embers can land on. Make it fire-resistant and keep it clean.


Phase 2: The Gutters (The Ember Trap)

Goal: Eliminate the most common ignition point.

  • The Problem: Gutters full of dry leaves and pine needles are the perfect tinder for embers.
  • The Action: Clean gutters regularly, especially before and during fire season.
  • The Upgrade: Consider gutter guards to reduce debris accumulation.

The Takeaway: A clean gutter is a gutter that won’t ignite. Clean them before fire season.


Phase 3: The Vents (The Hidden Entry)

Goal: Keep embers out of your attic and crawl space.

  • The Problem: Unscreened vents let embers blow directly into your attic, where they ignite insulation and framing.
  • The Action: Screen all attic, crawl space, and eave vents with 1/8-inch or finer metal mesh.
  • The Upgrade: Consider ember-resistant vents designed specifically for wildfire zones.

The Takeaway: Your attic is a tinderbox. Screen the vents to keep embers out.


Phase 4: The Siding and Deck (The Flammable Shell)

Goal: Reduce flammable surfaces around your home.

  • The Siding: Replace flammable wood siding with non-combustible materials like stucco, fiber cement, or metal.
  • The Deck: A wood deck attached to the house is a fire bridge. Consider non-combustible decking, or keep the area under the deck clear of debris.
  • The Fence: A wood fence attached to the house can carry fire to the structure. Use a metal gate or a non-combustible section where the fence meets the house.

The Takeaway: Every flammable surface attached to your home is a path for fire. Reduce them.


The Essential Kit Checklist

  • The Roof: Confirm your roof is Class A fire-rated, and repair gaps.
  • The Gutters: Clean gutters before and during fire season.
  • The Vents: Screen all vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh.
  • The Siding: Replace flammable siding with non-combustible material.
  • The Deck: Clear debris from under the deck.

“I can’t afford to replace my wood shake roof.” The trap: doing nothing because the full fix is expensive. The fix: do the affordable steps first, clean the gutters, screen the vents, and clear debris. Every hardening step reduces your risk, even if you can’t do them all at once.

“My vents are already screened, but with wide mesh.” The trap: assuming any screen is enough. The fix: embers can pass through mesh wider than 1/8 inch. Upgrade to 1/8-inch or finer metal mesh to actually keep embers out.
