Prepping for a landslide (Part 5): The two-minute warning

Growing up in the woods, you learn pretty quickly that silence isn’t empty, it’s information. My dad, the geologist, taught me that the earth talks before it moves. Landslides are terrifying because they seem sudden, but in reality, the slope often screams before it fails, it groans, it cracks, and it shifts.

While earthquakes strike with zero notice, a landslide or mudflow often provides a critical “pre-failure” window. It might be minutes, or it might be hours. This is your window of survival. In this phase, you stop looking at charts and start using your senses, listening for the snap of roots, looking for the sudden muddying of creeks, and feeling for the vibration of the ground.

Audible cues (the sound of earth moving)

Landslides generate noise as millions of pounds of earth grind against bedrock and vegetation.

  • The low rumble: survivors often describe a faint, increasing rumble that sounds like a truck approaching or a freight train in the distance. Thunder rolls and fades, but a landslide rumble is constant and grows in intensity, grab your family and run.
  • The pop and snap: trees are the earth’s anchors, and when the soil shifts it puts massive tension on roots and trunks. You will hear loud cracks like gunshots or snapping timber, the sound of the anchors failing.
  • The rattle: as the ground vibrates, you might hear dishes rattling in cupboards or windows shaking in their frames, similar to the onset of an earthquake.

Hydraulic cues (reading the water)

Water is the engine of the slide, and watching how it behaves gives you a direct look at the engine’s status.

  • The muddy pulse: if a clear creek rapidly turns to a thick, muddy slurry (turbidity), soil is entering the water upstream in massive quantities.
  • The sudden stop: this is the most dangerous sign. If a raging stream suddenly trickles or stops during a storm, a slide has blocked the channel upstream, creating a temporary dam. When it bursts, it sends a catastrophic wall of mud and debris down the channel, move to high ground instantly.

Structural cues (the house is twisting)

Your house is a rigid box sitting on flexible ground. If the ground moves, the box warps.

  • The jammed door: if an exterior door sticks, or a window that worked yesterday refuses to open today, the frame has shifted.
  • The separation: look at where the wall meets the ceiling, or where an extension (porch or deck) meets the main house, are gaps appearing? Is the chimney pulling away from the siding?
  • The plumbing: sudden loss of water pressure or sewer backups can indicate that underground service lines have been sheared by ground movement.

Visual cues (the landscape shift)

  • The toe bulge: walk to the bottom of the slope (safely), does the ground look like it is swelling or heaving upward? This is the weight of the hill pushing the bottom out.
  • Tension cracks: look at the top of the slope for new cracks running parallel to the edge, this is where the “slab” of earth is detaching from stable ground.
  • Leaning infrastructure: fences, retaining walls, and telephone poles are your vertical references. If a fence line that was straight is now bowed or leaning downhill, the soil is creeping.

The animal factor (the canary)

Animals often sense vibration before we do. If your dogs become intensely agitated, refusing to go outside or barking at the ground or hillside, pay attention, it isn’t “proof,” but combined with heavy rain, it is a data point.


The actionable checklist

  • The drill: turn off the TV and appliances for 5 minutes tonight and listen to the ambient noise of your property so you know what “normal” sounds like.
  • The marker: draw a pencil line across existing cracks and date it so you can see if they are actively growing.
  • The stream check: identify a visual marker (a rock or bridge pylon) to gauge water level and clarity changes.
  • The go-bag location: move your go-bags near the door, not deep in a closet.
  • The alert: confirm your phone is set to receive wireless emergency alerts for flash floods.
