Prepping for a heatwave (Part 3): The human radiator
You can fortify your home perfectly, but if your internal cooling system fails, the temperature of the room doesn’t matter. Your body is a biological machine that generates heat 24/7. If you cannot dump that heat faster than you produce it, your core temperature rises until your organs shut down.
Most people think the solution to heat is simply “drink more water.” This is a dangerous half-truth. Drinking gallons of plain water without replacing salts can lead to hyponatremia (water intoxication), a condition just as deadly as dehydration. By treating your body like an engine, managing the coolant (hydration), the radiator (skin), and the fuel (diet), you can maintain a safe operating temperature even in a sweltering environment.

The coolant protocol (hydration and electrolytes)
The pre-load: you cannot hydrate instantly, you must start 24 hours before the heat spike. Your urine should be pale yellow before the sun comes up, if it is dark, you are starting the day in a deficit.
The electrolyte ratio: sweating dumps sodium and potassium, and replacing it with only plain water dilutes your blood sodium levels (hyponatremia), leading to seizures or coma. Follow the 2:1 rule, for every two bottles of plain water, drink one bottle of electrolyte mix (Pedialyte, Liquid IV, or Gatorade). For a DIY mix, add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar to one liter of water.
The radiator flush (active external cooling)
When the air is too hot for sweat to work (high wet bulb), you must manually cool the blood.
The pulse point strategy: major arteries run close to the surface of your skin at specific points, the neck (carotid), armpits (axillary), groin (femoral), and wrists (radial). Cooling these points cools the blood circulating through your entire core. Apply ice packs (wrapped in a thin cloth) or cold wet towels to these spots for 10 minutes.
The swamp cooler hack: wear a wet t-shirt or sleep under a damp sheet, and point a battery-operated fan directly at the wet fabric. This forces evaporation, pulling massive amounts of heat off your body instantly and creating a micro-climate of cool air right on your skin.
Metabolic management (internal heat)
Digestion = heat: digestion is a metabolic process that generates internal body heat (thermogenesis). Avoid heavy proteins (steaks, burgers) and complex carbs, which your body has to work hard to break down. Eat high-water-content foods, watermelon, cucumber, salads, and fruits, which require little energy to digest and add hydration.
The siesta rule: shift your schedule and do absolutely nothing between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Lay low, keep your heart rate down, and do chores early in the morning or late at night.
The essential kit checklist
- The additive: a stockpile of powdered electrolyte mix (shelf-stable).
- The hardware: a simple spray bottle to mist your skin.
- The wearable: cooling towels (synthetic towels that hold water without dripping).
- The monitor: check your urine color every time you go, clear or pale is good.
